Back in 2005 an army
buddy persuaded me to try internet dating, as that was how he met his wife, and
he had a good marriage. The first thing that got my attention when looking over
women's profiles on various websites was that it seemed that the vast majority
described themselves as nice people who like to have fun without mentioning
beliefs, values, expectations, etc. There were Yahoo Discussion Groups for
Christian singles that said just write a description of yourself and what you
are looking for, which I did. I got numerous angry and insulting comments from
women that were apparently traumatized by my beliefs in Christian values, such
as patriarchy, and could not just assume that my advertisements did not apply
to them. (It couldn't be simpler. If a man believes in patriarchy and is
looking for a submissive woman and you are a woman seeking a matriarchal or
egalitarian partnership, there is no need to be hating, just recognize that he
is not a match for you.) Around that time eHarmony offered a one-month free
trial, which I tried. I thought my profile and answers to their questionnaire
made it clear that I wanted a wife, not a husband, but they kept trying to
match me with female GIs. I did meet a few nice women over the internet, but
the nice ones that appeared to have similar interests and values usually lived
far, far away, making it difficult to get very well acquainted.
